Held in Hong Kong from November 2-5, the seventh annual Citi International Case Competition (CICC) attracted a record 21 teams from ten countries: Australia, Canada, China, Finland, Japan, Korea, The Netherlands, Singapore, Thailand and the US. The Citi International Case Competition is jointly organised by Citi and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology’s School of Business and Management (HKUST), and sponsored by the Citi Foundation.

Case competitions are among the most demanding of BCom enrichment activities. Case competitions give students the opportunity to deal with challenges facing an actual company, a fantastic example of knowledge transfer. Students require highly developed analytical skills, outstanding presentations skills, team work and leadership, and extraordinary stamina. To succeed students must also work under intense pressure, with limited respite.

Victory does not come easily. The Faculty has a careful selection process and many weeks sacrificing Saturdays are spent of intensive training. Excellent training is always provided by Professor Greg Whitwell, colleagues in marketing Professor Simon Bell and accounting Dr Jennifer Grafton who gave up their valuable time to train the students. Special thanks also goes to past participants Tristan Webster and Marc Costabile who provided advice in practice sessions on analytical and presentation skills, and whom are now employed by leading consulting firms themselves.

Such case competitions brings together outstanding students from leading business schools from around the world to compete; all get to see the quality of the undergraduate education that they obtain at Melbourne enables them to compete effectively against some of the most widely respected business schools in the world. The result at CCIC is evidence that our graduates can justly say that they are world class.

Make-A-Wish® Australia brings magic and joy to children with a life-threatening illness by granting their most cherished Wish. Since 1985, we have granted in excess of 5,000 unique Wishes. Our vision is that all Australians have the opportunity to share the power of a Wish.

For each of the internships below, we are looking for one enthusiastic person who wishes to ideally take on a 3-6 months internship in our Victorian/Tasmania State Office. To support the learning and continuity of work undertaken by the intern, this will ideally involve a minimum of 2 full days of work each week. Reporting to the State Manager the internship work will involve:

Internship 1:

• Sourcing of Auction Item Prizes for a major gala event in 2010
• Researching businesses to approach for prizes
• Ability to communicate confidentially with suppliers over the phone and via email
• Approaching businesses for prizes by phone, email and letter
• General office work

Internship 2:

• Recruitment of volunteers for Make-A-Wish’s International Day of fundraising and awareness, World Wish Day 2010 held on 29th April 2010.
• Research to identify opportunities to recruit World Wish Day volunteers
• Ability to liaise with volunteers over the phone and via email
• Possible attendance at volunteering expo’s to encourage volunteers
• Administrative duties
• General office work

These internships would suit someone who is currently studying their Degree or Post-Graduate qualification in Events/Arts Management, Marketing etc.

Ideally you will have excellent computer skills in Microsoft Word and Excel, a confident telephone manner and a high level of attention to detail.

The volunteer work is based at Make-A-Wish’s Office in Melbourne. This work would not suit someone who is seeking ongoing employment.

Over 20 teams of university students across Victoria submitted their 2-minute business pitch online, and within a week they were battling it out in the Semi-Finals, live in front of a panel of judges. Ranging from unique business concepts in the Idea Stage Category to the more established businesses in the Open Category, the top 8 Finalists were chosen that night.

On the 15th of October, an audience of entrepreneurs, industry leaders and academics were gathered in Level 1 of The Spot Building, the University of Melbourne, to witness the Finalists pitch their ideas to a panel of judges comprising of angel investors.

Taking the first-prize of the Open category was Melbourne Op Shop Tours, founded by University of Melbourne students Jess Rae, Jenny Jiang and Richmond Glasgow, whilst charitable business idea Heart Parks won first-prize of the Idea Stage category. Second-place winners were iWannaTutor (Open category) and PinPointer (Idea Stage category).

Volunteering in Kenya and Rwanda with GAPS is a fantastic opportunity to experience the real Africa and participate in programs at a grassroots level whilst having an amazing time and meeting likeminded people from all over the world. Volunteers have an enormous impact on communities through our new programs which range from primary school teaching in rural Maasai villages, working in orphanages, working with genocide victims in Rwanda, developing an early childhood education, and some programs specifically targeted at skill groups such as medicine and other health professions.

GAPS is an Australian-based youth-run organisation which focuses on partnering groups in the developed and developing world to help achieve sustainable growth. GAPS works in the areas of education, medical development, microfinance and rural development.
