Dean’s Lecture:
Great challenges for a healthy planet
Professor Rob Moodie
Chair of Global Health, the Nossal Institute for Global Health;
Chair, National Preventative Health Task Force;
Acting Chair, Commission on AIDS in the Pacific.
The challenges to global health and the wellbeing of the planet are many and varied. Professor Moodie will explore the complex contemporary health challenges we face and some of the associated moral dilemmas, from maternal deaths to the health impacts of climate change. He will examine economic and social issues influencing our health and highlight how intertwined the politics of health, equity and justice have become.
Professor Moodie provides evidence of the relentless increase in the role of the market place, from Melbourne to Mumbai to Maputo, in determining our wellbeing. He looks at the burgeoning of players in global health, providing an insight into the work of the World Health Organization, the Gates Foundation and the direction of global health leadership.
Professor Moodie draws on over 30 years experience in clinical medicine and public health for organisations such as
Save the Children Fund, Médecins Sans Frontiers, the World Health Organization, the joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and VicHealth.
