Rock’s Backpages (Trial)

 - Rock’s Backpages will return to the Library in early 2012 when the paid subscription commences -

Rock’s Backpages is the ultimate rock & roll library online – an ever-growing archive of legendary interviews, classic features, and groundbreaking reviews by the best rock writers of all time.  The archive draws on numerous publications from Creem and Trouser Press to Rolling Stone, and from New Musical Express and Melody Maker to MOJO.  It is fully searchable by artist, genre,writer or keyword (allowing search by album or single title, date etc).

Rock’s Backpages also features a library of over 100 audio interviews, including classic conversations with Jimi Hendrix, Mick Jagger, Morrissey, Little Richard, Arthur Lee, Joni Mitchell, Johnny Cash, Nick Cave, Elvis Costello, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits and many more.

    Quite good for what it does have, but missing some important writers and issues, e.g.Rolling Stone: ” We have some issues from 1969, and all issues from 1970 to 1978, 1980 to 1982, 1987, 1989, 1991, 1992, 1994 and 2000 to 2002.”
    No sign of articles by Lillian Roxon; no Hunter S. Thompson; one by Cameron Crowe. These might be copyright restricted, but there is no statement up front acknowledging the limits of Rock Backpage’s access.

    Checked on the early career (1960-65) coverage of major and minor groups. Found the coverage reasonable, but I suspect that if you were looking at that era you should not rely on this source.

    I thought we trialed Rock’s Backpages last year?
