Postcard from Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholar in the US

Jessica taking advantage of the travel scholarship went to the USA to learn about the American Dream ideologies

“My name is Jessica and I am a second year Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholar and Bachelor of Arts student. This year I took advantage of the travel scholarship offered through the program and completed an intensive history subject called “Searching for the American Dream”.

During the whirlwind three weeks that we spent in the US, our group visited the cities of Boston, New York and Washington where we were fortunate enough to meet many Americans from different organisations, communities and walks of life. In our visits to a number of varied sites, we were able to discover the character of the American Dream today and the way the history of the nation has, in some ways, defined its future. It was such a unique opportunity to explore American history and challenge our perceptions of modern American society. Visiting important sites such as Salem and the Jefferson Memorial made history come alive and put our study in context. From basketball in Washington, a gospel church in Brooklyn, and a murder trial in Boston, we saw a diverse slice of America. Some personal highlights were seeing a Broadway show and meeting with academics and government representatives. As well as these organised visits, we were able explore the bustling cities on our own and immerse ourselves in what they had to offer.

Overall, it was a fantastic experience to travel with such a great group of students from a variety of courses and different universities, and see America from a different perspective.”
