Melbourne’s Information Future: one possible strategy
Draft for discussion and comment, released 22 May 2008.
Note: before reading this document, please read the Progress Report which provides context and caveats about this draft strategy.
Introduction
The following draft strategy represents one set of choices that we could make as a University.
It describes one possible future arising from the University’s aspirations, what we have learned about the external environment and what we have heard from the Information Futures Commission’s consultation process.
We begin by outlining a set of principles to guide the development and implementation of a scholarly information strategy. These principles provide a framework for operating in a rapidly changing environment: an environment in which education and its infrastructure is truly global; in which tensions between emerging client needs, existing values, competing demands and finite resources will be the norm.
We then propose a possible strategy for Melbourne’s information future — a strategy aimed at preparing Melbourne to compete and succeed in a global knowledge economy by building upon the University’s unique strengths. The strategy recognises that resources are not infinite, that in a time of rapid change the setting of priorities matters greatly, and that we must make bold choices.
