Dear Colleague:

Recently, we announced that we will be launching our all-new platform in 2010—removing the virtual walls between platforms. Soon, users at every level will instantly find specific information as well as discover more across a full spectrum of subject areas and complementary content types and formats—including millions of key journals, periodicals, newspapers, dissertations, reports, books, and more from unmatched resource collections.

With the all-new platform, powerful navigation tools will surface the most relevant full-text/image content to provide the complete story in its original context as well as critical tables and figures in publications that would be missed with other searches.

We’d like to give you a glimpse of the range of content that users will be able to cross search when the new platform launches in 2010. So we searched across just a small sampling of available resources on our current interface to demonstrate the various types of current and historic content that provides insight on renewable energy and stimulus funding resulting from the economic downturn. Click here to see the examples!

Soon, users will be able to search across content like this and more with all-new ProQuest platform. And we’re grateful to information professionals, like you, who have paved the way on the path to discovery with your input along the way.

Dear Books In Print Customer:

The time has come for Search to meet Discovery.

This month, Bowker announces the beta-release of Books In Print® 2.0 (BIP 2.0) an enhanced version of the book discovery and collection development platform that you already rely on for online book reference information, BooksInPrint.com®.

BIP 2.0 combines rich, comprehensive Books In Print content with powerful visual discovery interfaces from AquaBrowser, Bowker’s extremely popular search platform utilized by more than 500 libraries worldwide. The result is a breakthrough offering that enables librarians, researchers, and library patrons to discover relevant book information through a variety of cutting-edge collection development and Web 2.0 capabilities, including:
Relevancy-ranked search and faceted refine options that help users drill into the book information they need as quickly as possible;
Search results grouped by book edition (FRBR), making result lists easier to go through and the right items or editions much easier to locate;
New “social library” functionality that allows users to rate, review and tag items, enabling librarians and their patrons to discover and share information about books, and making possible happy search and discovery accidents that result even when certain information isn’t explicitly part of the original search query;
A new word cloud feature that provides users with a starburst of suggested terms, based on computer-generated word associations from the original search query and from user-generated content, allowing users to select from these associations and hone their queries, while also building a discovery trail that offers more relevant results to consider.

The introduction of critical new search and discovery functionality, in addition to the evolving social media research offered by the new interface, makes BooksInPrint.com an even more valuable resource for librarians, researchers and patrons. Over the coming months, we’ll be working closely with customers who have agreed to serve as formal BIP 2.0 beta testers and identifying appropriate product enhancements along the way.

The new site can be easily accessed from a link provided on the homepage of BooksInPrint.com or GlobalBooksInPrint.com, or by visiting the URL below. Your existing Books In Print login information will work with the new site. Any questions can be addressed through the FAQ, and contact information can be found on the BIP 2.0 home page.

July Content Release

Below is a snapshot of July’s Content Release:
15 libraries updated
9 titles added and 170 journals updated in the Law Journal Library
Including volume 122 (2008-2009) of the Harvard Law Review

10 titles added to the Legal Classics Library
44 titles added to the World Trials Library
Kavass’s Current Treaty Index (2009) & Treaties in Force (2009) added to the Treaties & Agreements library

21 Slip Opinions from June 2009 added to the U.S. Supreme Court Library
2008 NCCUSL Handbook added to the NCCUSL collection

First installment of taking all states back to 1990 in the Session Laws Collection

Highlights

Additions to HeinOnline’s Law Journal Library:

Antitrust Bulletin is Now Available From Inception

Published by Federal Legal Publications, the Antitrust Bulletin serves to present an objective record of antitrust law, practice and developments. With a monthly publishing schedule (except July and August), the Antitrust Bulletin includes reprints of influential law review articles, at least one original paper in each issue, summaries of key legislative activities, administrative rulings, and court decisions, a bibliography of current literature related to antitrust, book reviews, and more. Presented in reference form, this is a key resource for attorneys, economists and industrialists interested in the study of antitrust law.

James Cook University Law Review

As a peer-reviewed journal, the James Cook University Law Review aims to advance the scholarship of law. The James Cook University School of Law was established in 1990 as the only regional Law School in Queensland, Australia. The Review provides a forum for critical, conceptual and contextual analysis of regional, national and international issues in any field of law. Published in two issues per year, the Review includes articles, case notes, book reviews and comments.

SEC Docket

The SEC serves to promote the disclosure of important market-related and financial information, maintain fair dealing, and protect against fraud. This mission is accomplished through federal securities laws, which contain requirements for disclosing important information and restrictions against fraud and manipulative practices. Federal securities laws serve to protect the interest of investors and the public while governing the companies that are issuing securities to the public, investment advisors, holding and investment companies, as well as to individuals who buy and sell securities. All securities sold in the U.S. must be registered and filed with the SEC. There are various rules and forms that contain the disclosure and accounting requirements for the registration and reporting of securities. In order to uphold its mission, the SEC is continuously assessing these rules and forms, which results in ongoing rulemaking. The SEC Docket allows a researcher to stay current on the changing regulations as it contains new and historical SEC releases, rulings, opinions and official Commission actions.

Veterans Law Review

Veterans Law Review is published yearly by the Department of Veterans Affairs and the volunteer efforts of attorneys working at the Board of Veterans’ Appeals. HeinOnline is pleased to introduce the seminal issue of this new law review, which highlights legal issues and legal-policy concerns that the Office of the General Counsel, the Veterans Benefits Administration, the Board of Veterans’ Appeals and the Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims (Court) face when servicing the men and women who have served in the United States military. The Department of Veterans Affairs is faced with providing medical care, disability benefits and hearing and settling judicial claims for millions of veterans every year. This law review will contain articles, notes, comments and book reviews that will exemplify the commitment of the Department, attorneys, judges and employees who share in the efforts to provi de the best service to United States veterans.

Update on the Session Laws Library:

Currently, all states in HeinOnline’s Session Laws library are available back to 1995. We have now started to take all states back an additional five years to 1990, with this month’s release marking the first installment of this effort. There are four states now available back to inception: California, Illinois, New York and Ohio. Six additional states/jurisdictions are in production and being taken back to inception: Pennsylvania, Florida, Texas, Canada, Australia and Maryland. These six are scheduled to be completed approximately November/December 2009. Our goal is to take all states and jurisdictions back to inception.

New Articles From Volume 19 of Trends in Law Library Management & Technology:

LexOpus: Law Journal Submissions System
By: John Doyle, Associate Law Librarian, Washington and Lee School of Law
In spring 2009, the Washington and Lee Law School launched LexOpus, a free law journal submissions system. The difference between the LexOpus and the well known Expresso submission system is that Expresso sends simultaneous submissions to multiple law journals seeking offers from those journals, while LexOpus submits to author selected law journals in a sequence of short-term exclusive firm offers. This article briefly discusses the aims of LexOpus, some operational details, and a few concerns with maintaining such software.

The Law Library of Congress Enhances Access to Foreign and Comparative Law Information: The Global Legal Monitor and the Multinational Collections Database
By: Luis M. Acosta, Senior Information Analyst, Law Library of Congress

Luis Acosta describes two electronic publications maintained by the Law Library of Congress: the Global Legal Information Monitor, which monitors international, comparative, foreign and domestic developments, and the Multinational Collections Database, which assists researchers in finding legal information on a particular jurisdiction or jurisdictions.

The Global Legal Information Network Database
By: Charles P. Dove, Global Information Network Project Manager, Law Library of Congress

In an article entitled The Global Legal Information Database, Charles Dove provides an overview of the history and development of this free database which is maintained by the Law Library of Congress.

We have added an enhancement to HeinOnline this month that will now allow you to search for a term on a specific page or within a specific section that you are reading. This search option is available directly from the page toolbar, so you will no longer have to navigate to the search options in order to search within the article or document you are reading.

Amsterdam – June 12, 2009 – Elsevier today announced a new partnership agreement with NextBio, provider of an innovative platform that enables life science researchers to search, discover, and share knowledge locked within public and proprietary data to enrich ScienceDirect content. This agreement allows for an integration of NextBio’s unique set of ontology-based semantic tools and a compilation of high quality sources of public data on ScienceDirect, providing health science, life science and chemistry researchers with a dynamic platform to improve discoverability and research productivity.

While most scientific information on genes, pathways, diseases, tissues and compounds is available online, it currently resides in various, disconnected, locations. Enhancing ScienceDirect with NextBio’s biomedical ontology framework enables life sciences, health sciences and chemistry researchers to analyze ScienceDirect content and search ScienceDirect peer-reviewed literature together with publicly available research data from PubMed, clinical trials, experimental data, and news articles, on one single platform. The new enhancement will become available on ScienceDirect and accessible to subscribed users in summer 2009.

“ScienceDirect plays a crucial role in researchers’ workflow.” explained Rafael Sidi, Vice President, Product Management, ScienceDirect. “We continuously seek new ways to help accelerate science by increasing research productivity and efficiency. Partnering with NextBio will help further this mission by allowing us to provide intelligent and insightful information and smarter content to help researchers do research better.

Researchers at Stanford Genome Technology Center use ScienceDirect to enhance and accelerate their life sciences research efforts,” said Dr. Baback Gharizadeh, Research Scientist at Stanford University. “We are excited about ScienceDirect leveraging NextBio’s technology to explore literature findings within the context of public experimental data and related basic and clinical research. Its unique content and the ability to test new hypotheses provide the next logical step in exploiting published studies.”

Project MUSE is excited to announce two new features that help users more easily locate articles relevant to their research.
MUSE also introduces a new option to custom print and package articles in MUSE journals.

The new features are:

-A ‘Search this Journal’ search box. This search box appears on each journal’s home page, on the Table of Contents (TOC) of each issue, and on each article. The ‘Search This Journal’ feature enables a user to quickly check all issues of the journal in MUSE, with a single search, for all articles in that journal pertaining to a particular subject.

-Summaries (abstracts) for articles. MUSE now provides a link for the summary of each article. Users know that the ability to scan summaries of articles is essential to determining which articles are relevant to their research. That ability is now available in MUSE. The Summary links appear on the TOCs and in search results, next to the article format options of HTML and PDF.

New Option for Custom Print

Custom Print is a service provided by Sheridan Press that allows a user to click on a link from MUSE and purchase an article or groups of articles for the purpose of creating a custom publication. MUSE is one of the first online providers to activate this service. The user may choose either print or electronic format for the purchased articles. At this time, articles contained in ‘The American Indian Quarterly’ published by the University of Nebraska Press are the only articles in MUSE for which this option is available. On the article page, look for the link ‘Custom Print’ to initiate the transaction.
