On September 23rd, ITHAKA held a day-long meeting focused on the sustainability of scholarly communications. We were joined by leaders from libraries, presses, publishers, and learned societies, as well as editors, digital project leaders, and funders working in higher education

contents include:

Daniel Greenstein, Vice Provost for Academic Planning, Programs, and Coordination, University of California

Daniel Greenstein provides strategic leadership for system-wide academic planning and initiatives at the University of California, including oversight of the UC digital library, publishing, and broadcast services. He is a leader among university administrators responsible for thinking systematically about the values that our system of scholarly communication should reflect and how to define and achieve sustainability from the creation of new scholarship through to its long-term preservation and accessibility. Daniel shares his vision for scholarly communication for UC, how this fits into our broader ecosystem, and what forces and factors will impact success.

Suzanne Thorin, Dean of Libraries and University Librarian, Syracuse University

The economic downturn is impacting many organizations vital to the scholarly enterprise. Speakers from two libraries, a press, and a society provide an inside look at how the current economic crisis is affecting their organizations and the innovative strategies they are employing to ensure they continue to thrive and deliver sustainable value to our community.
