For many years, the scientific community made use of the Journal Impact Factor, created by Garfield and Sher in 1963 and commercially distributed by the Institute of Scientific Information (ISI-today part of Thomson Reuters), to approximate the standing of an academic periodical. Nowadays, we are confronted with a multitude of different impact factors, namely, the (old) ISI Impact Factor, the (new) five-year Thomson Reuters impact factor, the trend line of Elsevier’s Scopus, the H index of journals, the SCImago index by the Spanish SCImago Group, and the Eigenfactor score created by Carl Bergstrom. How can we keep an overview? What do these indices measure? What does “standing of a journal” mean: its impact on the scientific community, its perceived reputation, its value, its quality, its prestige, its influence? Is there a kind of toolbox with different infometric tools to describe and evaluate scholarly journals? Is there a leading indicator? And-above all-are journal impact indicators really useful?

The latest Journal Citation Reports (JCR) by Thomson Reuters again place University of Chicago Press journals at the top of their fields. Fourteen of the thirty-three Press journals rated in the JCR have impact factors in the top ten of their respective categories, with eight journals ranking in the top five.

Calculated each year, JCR impact factors measure how often articles in a given journal are cited in other peer reviewed publications.

Two publications — The American Historical Review and the Journal of Labor Economics — ranked first in their respective categories of “History” and “Industrial Relations & Labor.” JOLE also increased its ranking to thirteenth among the more than two hundred journals in the “Economics” category.

The Quarterly Review of Biology raised its ranking from tenth to fourth among Biology journals, while Clinical Infectious Diseases and The Journal of Infectious Diseases ranked second and fourth in “Infectious Diseases.” Other journals in the top five of their respective categories were American Journal of Sociology (second in “Sociology”), The Journal of Geology (third in “Geology”), Current Anthropology (fifth in “Anthropology”), Journal of British Studies (fifth in “History”) and Journal of Political Economy (fifth in “Economics”).

Also making substantial gains in rank were Physiological and Biochemical Zoology, which moved up to eleventh among over one hundred journals in “Zoology,” and Osiris, which moved up to eighth among “History and Philosophy of Science/Social Science”
journals.

“We are proud that University of Chicago Press journals continue to play a prominent role in scholarly conversation across a wide variety of disciplines,” said Press Director Garrett Kiely. “Our consistently high impact factors are a reflection of the high standards of excellence the Press maintains in the publication of our entire journals portfolio.”

June 23, 2009

Hindawi Publishing Corporation is pleased to announce that it has seen very strong growth in the Impact Factors of its journals in the recently released 2008 Journal Citation Report published by Thomson Scientific. This most recent Journal Citation Report shows the average Impact Factor of Hindawi’s journals increasing by more than 27% over the past year, with two of Hindawi’s largest journals, EURASIP Journal on Advances in Signal Processing and Mathematical Problems in Engineering, rising by 70% and 45% respectively.

“I am very pleased to see the Impact Factors of our journals continue to grow at such a rapid pace,” said Paul Peters, Head of Business Development for Hindawi. “It is nice to see many of our more well-established journals building such strong reputations within the academic community as we continue to expand our publishing program into new areas.”

In addition to the 14 journals that were included in the 2007 Journal Citation Report, three of Hindawi’s journals received Impact Factors for the first time this year: Clinical and Developmental Immunology, EURASIP Journal on Wireless Communications and Networking, and Journal of Nanomaterials.

Philadelphia, PA, London, UK, June 22, 2009 – The Healthcare & Science business of Thomson Reuters today announced the release of the 2008 Journal Citation Reports, available to subscribers of the JCR. These metrics have come to define journal performance across disciplines and institutions worldwide. The 2008 JCR contains more than 400 new titles, including more than 350 titles that will have their first published Journal Impact Factor.

The release of the 2008 Journal Citation Reports includes the first-ever update to the newly introduced Five Year Impact Factor and Eigenfactor™ Metrics in JCR Web. Eigenfactor™ Metrics use citing journal data from the entire JCR file to reflect the prestige and citation influence of journals by considering scholarly literature as a network of journal-to-journal relationships.

“The research community anticipates the annual release of JCR as it always means new discovery,” said James Testa, Senior Director, Editorial Development and Publisher Relations at Thomson Reuters. “The addition of new metrics such as the Five Year Impact Factor is a reflection of our commitment to providing publishers and scholars with tools that allow a more multifaceted understanding of a journal’s place in the world.”

JCR presents quantitative data that provide an objective way to evaluate the world’s leading journals and their impact and influence in the global research community. In addition to the benefits these metrics offer to authors and institutions, JCR and Impact Factors may be used by publishers to benchmark journal performance against competitors to create a better focused market strategy.

JCR covers more than 8,000 of the world’s most highly cited, peer-reviewed journals from 66 nations. The production of the 2008 JCR included the analysis of more than 44 million cited references from journals, and proceedings.
