The Cambridge Library Collection is a new collaboration between the Cambridge University Library and Cambridge University Press, the world’s oldest publisher. Already a pioneer in the republishing of titles from its own backlist, Cambridge University Press is extending its reach to include other books of enduring scholarly value that are still of interest to researchers, students, and the general reader. Examples include a book on Darwinism by the other great theorist of natural selection, Alfred Russel Wallace; two preliminary essays to On the Origin of Species; family reminiscences of Jane Austen gathered by her nephew; the correspondence between Richard Wagner and Franz Liszt; a study of the health of the rowers in the Oxford and Cambridge boat race between 1829 and 1869; and a 19th-century Englishwoman’s impressions of America.

The French Creek Press model for non-academic publishing is print on demand. We provide editing services to any author, we lay out the books, and then print each book as it is paid for. Yes, the per unit cost is higher than the per unit cost of offset printing. The benefit of print on demand reveals itself when the book sells in small quantities. No author should be forced to pay for 500 books if only 100 books will be sold. Is there a place for 100 books? Absolutely. Everyone has a voice. The beauty of print on demand is that the book can easily transition from the print on demand model to the offset print model, when the book becomes a high seller.

It’s not elegant: it looks like a large photocopier. But the Espresso Book Machine could herald the biggest change for the literary world since Gutenberg invented his printing press more than 500 years ago.
Unveiled today at Blackwell’s Charing Cross Road branch, in central London, the machine prints and binds books in five minutes.
