Setting up Papers for the Mac

Papers from mekentosj.com is a personal library application for the mac, iPhone and iPod touch which helps you search, retrieve, archive and manage scientific papers from sources such as Scopus, PubMed, IEEE and Web of Science. Although the University of Melbourne does not sell or support Papers we can give you a few setup tips to get you started.

Firstly you need to set Papers to work with our proxy server.

  1. Go to the Papers Preferences and select the Sources tab
  2. Enter the Authentication URL http://ezp.lib.unimelb.edu.au/login
  3. Tick the box to “Go to this page when Papers is started”
  4. Enter the Library Proxy http://ezp.lib.unimelb.edu.au/login?url=%@
  5. Close preferences and Papers and restart the application.

You will then need to login to the library proxy using your central username and password when you start Papers.

If you search Scopus from within Papers you will need to provide our Scopus ID: 28178.

If you search Web of Science from within Papers you will also need to make a change to a support file:

  1. In Finder on your Mac go to /Users/yourusername/Library/Application Support/Papers/Plugins/SearchEngines/WOSSearchEngin.searchengine/Contents/Resources and open the file called gatewayurl.txt
  2. Replace the single line of text with the line below without any spaces:

http://wok-ws.isiknowledge.com.ezp.lib.unimelb.edu.au/esti/soap/SearchRetrieve

Although we don’t support Papers, and can’t help if you have trouble, there are support forums at the mekentosj site http://mekentosj.com/papers/help15/.

Thanks so much for this. I’ve been trying and waiting a long time for this, and I came across it in yet another desperate web search. Just brilliant!

Everything worked very well for me at home, initially, but lately I can’t use the Scopus repository from home, even after authenticating. As far as I am aware, nothing in my configuration has changed. Do you have any ideas?

Unfortunately I don’t have a Mac I can install and test on so I can’t check myself, I can only offer very general advice. Nothing has changed recently in our Scopus setup and I can still search Scopus through their web interface, the problem is more likely to be with the authentication. Try re-doing your setup of Papers (check no old passwords are saved anywhere etc) and next time you are at Uni check if you can search Scopus through Papers from there. If the problem persists or you have different results at home and at Uni please log a help desk call so ITS can check the proxy server setup.

    Dear Caroline

Do you think you can add this line to ezproxy.cfg or arrange for IT to do it?

    Host links.isiglobalnet2.com

As when I try to access some links through Papers I get the following error:

To allow http://links.isiglobalnet2.com/gateway/Gateway.cgi?GWVersion=2&SrcAuth=mekentosj&SrcApp=Papers&DestLinkType=FullRecord&DestApp=WOS&KeyUT=A1996TP13500001 to be used in a starting point URL, your EZproxy administrator must first authorize the hostname of this URL in the ezproxy.cfg file.

Within this database’s section of ezproxy.cfg, the following line must be added:

    Host links.isiglobalnet2.com
The EZproxy server must then be restarted to make the change take effect.

Cheers and many thanks for the initial proxy changes, it’s great

    Rob

Hi Caroline — indeed, after reseting/updating anything I can think of within papers, and confirming dates and such so that I know my password hasn’t changed anyway since the failures noted above, I have also confirmed that everything works beautifully from Uni, but from home the repositories and matching (for scopus) doesn’t work. I’ve updated to 1.9.3 as well, but that didn’t help either. I guess I’m stuck for the time being (again). Maybe something will occur to me in time. Thanks for trying!

Ah — just re-read your suggestion to contact ITS. Will try that as soon as I get a chance.

    Hi Rob,

We do quite a few of these and have a process setup with our IT support to handle them. They can just be submitted through the IT Help Desk form by choosing Library Systems Support and Electronic Resources Support. I’ll put this one through for you so don’t be surprised if you get a response from the Help Desk!

    Cheers, Caroline

    Caroline,

I can’t set up papers on my ipad at all. I have entered the correct ezproxy but when I try to connect to JSTOR, it says ‘authentication failed it is very likely that you have access only within your institution’s network’ when I open the authentication page, it says;to allow http://ezp.unimelb.edu.au/login to be used in a starting point URL, your EZproxy administrator must first authorize the hostname of this URL in the config.txt.file. Within this database’s section of config.txt, either the following line must be added: host ezp.unimelb.edu.au or, RedirectSafe for this host or domain maybe appropriate. After editing config.txt, the EZproxy server must be restarted to make changes take effect.
I know nothing about how this work.
    Please help.
    Thank you.

The new ezproxy address is a little tricky and I think you might be missing part of it. Put .lib between ezp and unimelb and try again. It should be http://ezp.lib.unimelb.edu.au/login for authentication and http://ezp.lib.unimelb.edu.au/login?url=%@ for proxy.

    Cheers, Caroline

    Caroline,

The authentication page does open, but I still can’t use the proxy. the same message appear, it can be accessed only within the institute’s network.
    thank you.

Charissa, I can only replicate your problem if I have the wrong Authentication URL setup in my Papers Preferences. Could you check your preferences again and make sure there is .lib between ezp and unimelb in the Authentication URL?
    Cheers, Caroline

Caroline, the ezproxy on my ipad needs authentication from the administrator to be used as a starting point url. the address is correct.

    Thank you

Charissa, in your commment above you said you see a message on your authentication page “to allow http://ezp.unimelb.edu.au/login to be used as a starting point URL… ” Actually the URL in this message is not a valid URL and it is not the URL for our ezproxy server which authenticates you for JSTOR. I can’t add the URL you have given to our ezproxy config.txt because it is not a valid URL. Our server URL is http://ezp.lib.unimleb.edu.au/login and if you have this in your Authentication settings for Papers you should see our login boxes instead of this error message.

It sounds like you might need someone to look at the Papers settings for you. Are you able to drop into Student IT anytime soon? If you can, show them these comments and I’m sure they will be able to help you set your Papers authentication up
