Ejournals in the catalogue

We are very excited to announce that after much hard work and testing we have refined our process for exporting the ejournal collection from SuperSearch and loading it into the Library Catalogue to provide access to between 65,000-70,000 electronic journals and proceedings.

The first new ejournal load into the catalogue was completed on Friday 16^th October containing 69,571 ejournal holdings.

Together with the new ejournals into the Catalogue process a new search option has become available from the WebPAC for ‘Database Name’ that delivers a search box and A-Z list option for accessing ejournals by their package name, e.g. ScienceDirect Freedom Collection.

Highlights of this new process are;

New loads will be completed once a month
All changes to ejournal packages and data are completed in SuperSearch
Changes to ejournal records in the Catalogue are only made via the monthly load process

Library Systems will soon be offering information sessions to demonstrate some highlights of this new ejournals into the Catalogue load process (Watch for this in Library News)

Search SuperSearch by subject set

You can now choose a pre-defined set of databases when you start SuperSearch from the library home page. The librarians have defined a number of database “QuickSearch” sets for broad subject areas to give you more specific search results. Choose your best subject match from the drop down list in front of the SuperSearch box on the library home page.

Not all the databases relevant to your subject can be included in this search as some databases are not cross searchable. You can still create your own set of databases on the Multi Database Search tab.

Interlibrary Loan journal article requests via Source It

Approximately 75% of Interlibrary Loan (ILL) requests are for journal articles. Some requests are for articles which are actually available electronically to us via our existing subscriptions. This creates needless delays for our users as well as extra library staff labour and expense.

On Friday 18 September we are launching a new process for requesting journal articles which facilitates seamless checking of electronic holdings before an ILL request is submitted.

Patrons can begin their request from the ILL pages in the web catalogue or from the Source It window.

A Source It window will inform requestors if we hold an article.

If not, clicking on the ILL link pre-populates a request form with details of the article they are looking for. All that remains is to enter their patron details and submit.

Add a Catalogue search to your browser

Do you use the inbuilt search box in the top right of your browser toolbar? If so, you can now add a UniMelb Library Catalogue Keyword search to your list of browser search engines in Firefox 2 or higher and Internet Explorer 7 or higher.

Firefox users:
1. Visit the library home page;
2. Click on the arrow next to the search box in the top right of your browser window;
3. Choose ‘Add “UniMelb Catalogue Search”‘ to add it permanently to your search engine list.

Internet Explorer Users:
1. Visit the library home page;
2. Click on the arrow next to the search box in the top right of your browser window;
3. Click on ‘Add Search Providers’ and choose”UniMelb Catalogue Search” to add it permanently to your search engine list.

Digital Repository Statistical and Recently Added Reports

The Digital Repository now provides a number of statistical and recently added reports from the main repository page. You will be able to see the links to these reports in the top right hand corner (near the login boxes) of the main page of the Repository

Digital Repository Statistics

Currently the Statistics page provides reports related to the Research Collections (UMER) and links to statistics for all other collections. The totals displayed in each statistical report refers to the number of fulltext downloads (except for the totals in the reports for most contributions). Please note that the reports for All Years are quite large and can take a few minutes to load.

Recently Added

The Recently Added page includes reports and RSS feeds for a variety of Repository Collections that are being updated on a regular basis.

SuperSearch and Digital Repository Maintenance Window

There is now an established maintenance window for SuperSearch and the Digital Repository. Every Friday between 8am-10am has now been set aside to apply required maintenance tasks. During this window there is potential for downtime or restricted functionality for both services and we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

Occasionally other outages will occur but notification will be provided via the SuperSearch and the Repository and the usual email methods.

Online books and journals in the Library Catalogue

The Library Catalogue contains records for over 40,000 online books, journals, indexes etc. It is now possible to limit your searching to these records – many of which link to electronic versions of the full text.

You can search these records by keyword from the front page, or you can limit any search to records for online journals, books, etc. by selecting the dropdown option on all search pages.

New Peer Reviewed indicator in SuperSearch Results

After our maintenance of SuperSearch this morning you should notice an additional icon in your search results which indicates an article is peer reviewed. This icon will appear instead of the normal full text icon for any articles the publisher is advertising as peer reviewed.

LibX UniMelb toolbar updated for Firefox 3.5

Now that Firefox 3.5 has been officially released we have updated the LibX UniMelb toolbar so it will be compatible. You can download the new version of LibX UniMelb even if you haven’t upgraded to Firefox 3.5 yet.

Setting up Papers for the Mac

Papers from mekentosj.com is a personal library application for the mac, iPhone and iPod touch which helps you search, retrieve, archive and manage scientific papers from sources such as Scopus, PubMed, IEEE and Web of Science. Although the University of Melbourne does not sell or support Papers we can give you a few setup tips to get you started.

Firstly you need to set Papers to work with our proxy server.

Go to the Papers Preferences and select the Sources tab
Enter the Authentication URL http://ezp.lib.unimelb.edu.au/login
Tick the box to “Go to this page when Papers is started”
Enter the Library Proxy http://ezp.lib.unimelb.edu.au/login?url=%@
Close preferences and Papers and restart the application.

You will then need to login to the library proxy using your central username and password when you start Papers.

If you search Scopus from within Papers you will need to provide our Scopus ID: 28178.

If you search Web of Science from within Papers you will also need to make a change to a support file:

In Finder on your Mac go to /Users/yourusername/Library/Application Support/Papers/Plugins/SearchEngines/WOSSearchEngin.searchengine/Contents/Resources and open the file called gatewayurl.txt
Replace the single line of text with the line below without any spaces:

http://wok-ws.isiknowledge.com.ezp.lib.unimelb.edu.au/esti/soap/SearchRetrieve
