The University of Melbourne’s Green Roof Research Program will look at tackling climate change through planting vegetation on city roofs and has won State Government funding to make the green roofs a reality.
University of Melbourne lecturer Dr Nicholas Williams said the Green Roof Research Program would also develop an understanding of the attitudes of building owners, developers, planners and other stakeholders about green roofs.
“Our research will significantly progress the Australian green roof industry by overcoming barriers to their implementation and will lead to multiple environmental, economic and health benefits,” Dr Williams said.
Environment and Climate Change Minister Gavin Jennings said the Government had contributed $120,000 over three years to tackle climate change through innovative solutions such as the green roof project “because a sustainable environment is crucial to our future”.
The Green Roof Research Program is also funded by a $1.33 million Australian Research Council 2009 Linkage Project grant that includes a financial contribution from Melbourne Water and in-kind support from Melbourne City Council and the Committee for Melbourne.
