New Wellbeing Program for University staff

A Wellbeing Program designed to contribute to the health and life skills of staff has been introduced at the University of Melbourne.

The first of its kind at the University, the program brings together via its web site regularly updated information on a range of events and activities across the University of Melbourne. These cover the physical, lifestyle and psychological dimensions of wellbeing.

Included in the current program is a course in mindfulness meditation, an introduction to group fitness at Melbourne University Sport, workshops on ‘Enhancing Wellbeing and Managing Stress’ and ‘Managing Yourself Through Change’, and information sessions presented by the Equal Opportunity. The web site also provides information, resources and links to wellbeing-related topics and allows staff to take a wellbeing test.

Director, Wellbeing Services, Mr Garry Thomson said that initial uptake of the program has already been strong, with a full class attending the first ‘Taste of Mindfulness’ meditation session, and many expressions of interest for other upcoming workshops.

The Provost, Professor Peter McPhee, has warmly endorsed this initiative: “One of the University’s greatest strengths is the quality and dedication of its staff, and this program recognises the importance of developing the health and wellbeing of the people in our community,” he said.

Mr Thomson said that the concept of wellbeing represents a proactive stance towards health in all its aspects, and explores ways we can actively work towards a happy and fulfilling life.

“This program represents a commitment by the University to supporting its staff, and acknowledges the vital area of promoting the wellbeing of members of the University community.”

The program, coordinated by the University’s Counselling Service within the Office of the Provost, involves partnerships with Melbourne University Sport, Human Resources, the Environmental Health and Safety Unit, and other academic and professional areas across the University.
