Beginning his professional music career as a trumpeter, Professor McPherson now holds the Marilyn Plederer Zimmerman endowed Chair in the School of Music at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, a position he took up in 2005. He was previously Professor and Head of the Department of Creative Arts at the Hong Kong Institute of Education, after 15 years in the School of Music and Music Education at the University of New South Wales.

On 6 April 2009, the University’s two music teaching and research arms – the Faculty of Music and the Victorian College of the Arts School of Music – will come together in a single School of Music within the new Faculty of the VCA and Music. The new School will have a strong identity and a clear vision for international excellence in music training, education, scholarship and research.
