McCaughey Centre Seminar 10-Mar-09: Music, Wellbeing and Adolescents

1.00pm – 2.00pm, Tuesday 10 March 2009
Room 515, Level 5, 207 Bouverie Street, Carlton
Presented by Dr Katrina McFerran, Senior Lecturer – Music Therapy, Faculty of Music, the University of Melbourne.

The relationship between adolescents and music is a powerful one. At no time in our lives do we dedicate more time to the emotional, physical and interpersonal functions of music than during our teenage years. Adolescents are often misinterpreted as passive consumers of music instead of active and engaged participants for this reason, yet the evidence suggests otherwise. This presentation will discuss the multiple functions of music during adolescence, drawing on studies of well and vulnerable adolescent cohorts. The particular role of music therapy will be described, with an emphasis on community music therapy models.

Dr Katrina McFerran completed her PhD at the University of Melbourne in 2001 on the topic of music therapy with bereaved adolescents. Since that time she has conducted numerous investigations with adolescents who have disabilities, mental illness, chronic illness, as well as the use of music by teenagers in schools.
