12.30pm – 1.30pm, Wed 27th May 2009 (via videoconference)
Seminar Room 515, Level 5, 207 Bouverie Street, Carlton
Professor Simon Chapman, Professor Public Health, Director of Research and Associate Dean Communications, The University of Sydney
Mae West once said “It is better to looked over, than overlooked.” Studies have repeatedly shown that news coverage of health issues influences personal behaviour, public agendas and political imperatives. Yet research on how the news media cover health is a relatively nascent field of public health research. In recognition of this, the NHMRC has awarded a 5 year Capacity Building Grant to scholars at the Universities of Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra to develop the Australian Health News Research Collaboration (AHNRC). In this talk, Prof Chapman will summarise the case for researching health and the news media. Drawing on a database of over 17,000 TV clips, he will present an overview of what health issues have been covered on Sydney TV since 2005; provide details of the parameters and structure of health news; and which categories of news actor (ie those interviewed in news) dominate. This information is essential foundational information for anyone wanting to become a more potent participant in public debate about health issues.
