MSPH/Nossal Joint Seminar 24-Jun-09: Mobile phones and 3rd world health – from the starship Enterprise to the health centres of Mozambique

12.30pm – 1.30pm, Wed 24th Jun 2009
Seminar Room 515, Level 5, 207 Bouverie Street, Carlton

Associate Professor Jim Black, Nossal Institute for Global Health, The University of Melbourne

Most diagnostic tools such as oximeters are an expensive luxury to most health workers in developing countries – but mobile phones have been enthusiastically embraced throughout much of the world, and we are now using their processors, displays and connectivity to turn them into useful tools for diagnosis and care at the health centre level. We have developed a toolkit, including a very low cost oximeter and a set of clinical calculators, for use by health workers in remote and underserved areas of the world.
