MSPH Seminar 22-Jul-09: Narrative based medicine – theoretical considerations and empirical examples of the use of stories in healthcare research

12.30pm – 1.30pm, Wed 22nd Jul 2009
Seminar Room 515, Level 5, 207 Bouverie Street, Carlton

Professor Trisha Greenhalgh, Professor of Primary Health Care, University College London

A story (narrative) is an account of events unfolding over time, in which there is a breach from the expected and in which literary devices, especially emplotment (the juxtaposition of events and actions to imply meaning, motive and causality), are used to appeal to the emotions. Narrative based medicine is a fashionable term, but what can narrative studies offer medicine and healthcare? This talk will consider both the theory and the application of the narrative approach.
