Universities are increasingly leaning towards community-based research and community-university partnerships. The trend indicates a growing awareness of the importance of grounding academic research in community experience.This presentation will explore ways of walking the line between academia and community outside of formal partnerships. I will be discussing the tensions that present in balancing commitments to academic organisations and community from an individual and organisational perspective. The presentation will examine what academic participation in community life looks like and the forms this participation can take.
