CMH Seminar 7-Sept-2017: Visual arts for strengthening mental health and wellbeing in teachers and students

12.30-1.30pm, Thurs 7th Sept 2017
Seminar Room 410, Level 4, 207 Bouverie Street, Carlton

Presented by Ms Margaret Nixon MEd.; Dip Ed; Dip Arts; and Ms Andrea Jackson, ELVA (Enhancing Emotional Literacy through Visual Arts) Program Manager at The Dax Centre.

This seminar will present the impact of participation in Contained Art Experiences (CAE) for staff and students who have experienced trauma of poverty and violence within a Nicaraguan culture.

Using case study and a/r/tography methodology, I am investigating the impact of a series of art classes that focus on encouraging participants to explore, communicate and share experiences and emotions through the provision of an attuned relationship. Of particular interest is the potential of staff participation in CAE as a reflective practice that brings greater awareness of self and strengthens their empathic stance towards their students. The implication of this study will inform wellbeing and arts education approaches in Australia.
