ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY UPDATE – OCTOBER 2009

ENERGY REDUCTION PROJECT ON TARGET

The University of Melbourne is well on its way to meeting its target of a 50% reduction in its carbon footprint by the end of 2010, due to a combination of reduced electricity usage and purchase of Green Power and Abatements. This reduction in electricity usage is equivalent to 19,550 mtCO2 and our aim is to reach 25,000 mtCO2 by the end of 2010.

WASTE AUDIT

An extensive waste audit of the Parkville campus is being undertaken and will be completed by the end of October 2009. Preliminary results already indicate opportunities for savings in processes of collecting and removing waste from the campus and that proposed changes should also have a positive impact on our diversion of recyclable waste from landfill.

The 9th International Conference of Australasian Campuses Toward’s Sustainability (ACTS Inc)
The conference was held on September 30th – October 2nd 2009 at Macquarie University, North Ryde, NSW. This year’s conference theme focused on “Carbon, Green Skilling and Water Conservation”, and attracted several fantastic keynote speakers from around the globe; Professor Tim Flannery, Professor Steven Schwartz, Ms Leith Sharp (Harvard University) and Adam Spencer. The Conference provided an opportunity to learn from other institutions and also provided information on all the positive gains the University of Melbourne has made in reducing its carbon footprint through various energy reduction projects. The set of environmental criteria has been developed by consultants AECOM and the Monash Sustainability Institute. Please find report attached: Victorian SCG Report for 2008 FINAL

SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT

End of Trip Facilities

The University of Melbourne promotes the use of more sustainable modes of transport. The provision of suitable end of trip facilities – bike parking, shower and change facilities and ready access to drinking water – is important in enabling staff and students to find alternatives to travelling to University by car. For more information and location of these facilities please see

http://sustainablecampus.unimelb.edu.au/difference/transport.html

Sustainable Traveller checklist

Whether you are a staff member or student at The University of Melbourne, there are steps we can all take to reduce our impact on the environment as we go about our daily activities. Use the following checklist for ideas on travelling more sustainably:

ELECTRICITY CONSUMPTION QUARTERLY REPORTS

Following significant improvements to energy metering during 2008, we are pleased to be able to offer month-by-month, building-by-building energy usage reports for Parkville campus buildings (plus Victorian College of the Arts and Music at Southbank).

Reports will be released quarterly, and will assist Faculties, Divisions and Departments to understand their contribution to the University’s overall carbon footprint, and track the impact each area’s efforts are making toward reducing our energy consumption. The reports are available at http://sustainablecampus.unimelb.edu.au/carbon/results.html

SUSTAINABLE CATERER CHECKLIST

A number of suggestions have been made by staff on sustainable catering. As a result a 10 point checklist has been developed on issues to take into consideration when undertaking any catering at the University, please see http://sustainablecampus.unimelb.edu.au/difference/purchasing/

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

The Environment Health and Safety Unit of Property & Campus Services and the Office of Environmental Programs (OEP) hosted the World Environment Day Lunch on Friday 5th June. The speakers included the University of Melbourne Climate Change expert Professor David Karoly and Vice-Principal (Property and Campus Services) Mr Chris White, who addressed the World Environment Day 2009 theme, “Your Planet needs you-UNite to Combat Climate Change”.

Professor Karoly highlighted the importance of adapting to climate change and Mr White outlined the measures that the University is taking to adapt, especially in relation to water and energy savings.

Mr White detailed the numerous measures the University is taking to curb carbon emissions and water use – from strategies as simple as changing the light bulbs, to the design of the new Economics and Commerce building at 198 Berkeley Street, a five Star Green Star rated building.
