I read with interest the article in Staff News on P&CS’s airline review.

There is mention of the review process exploring how the airlines are responding to the challenge of climate change. Can you provide some detail on what aspects of airline operations will be included in the review of their environmental impact?

Can you also advise if prices for the offsetting of flight emissions will be included in contract negotiations? I believe this would be very useful for the University as it works towards zero emissions.

While technological advances may have made some fuel efficiency gains over recent years, the increase in air travel marches on relentlessly. Government figures report that domestic air travel in Australia has doubled in the last eight years, from 25 million trips in 2000 to 49.76 million trips to end August 2008. The University will not be able to rely on aircraft efficiencies to negate the impact of following this trend in air travel. Rationalisation of trips and the offsetting of emissions from essential travel will be required if we are to contain the University’s emissions in this sector.

Note the newly released ‘Sustainable Transport’ webpage and ‘Sustainable Traveller’ checklist, at:

We are beginning to raise awareness of the impacts of transport.

Thanks for your feedback Jamie. A couple of points on your comments above. The rates that we have negotiated are available 7 days a week and any one of the four preferred hotels. Looking at the rates available through the website you have quoted (for UoM preferred hotels), the Rydges rates are quoted from $149 (Sunday night) to $169 (weekday). The rate that we have negotiated is $154 for 7 days a week which compares favourably. Also the rates that we have negotiated include discounts on food and beverage, parking and free of charge internet access which will not be available through the other avenue.

At this point in time we do not have the capabilities to provide dynamic pricing but this will change with the introduction of travel portal as one of the key functionalty is an online booking tool for preferred accommodation. This will not only provide us with the best available rates, but also the ability for hotels to load special rates during low yeild periods i.e. Sunday nights. An added bonus will be that the system will be fee free as UoM will host the application.

It is great that Melbourne Uni has negotiated a 9% reduction in rates and it will be interesting to see if they are comparable to other booking options. I have always found that when booking accommodation as an 'institution' or 'corporate' the rack rate is so much higher. Some of the so called online discount sites such as Wotif and Lastminute profess cheaper prices but then take on a 'booking fee'. The bottom line in this post is that I have always found the www.MelbourneAccommodation.tv website to offer the best rates, availability and no booking fees. Might be worth a look. Jamie
