Zoe Creelman is completing her Bachelor of Science (Honours) with an Agricultural Science major. Outside of her studies, she’s helping with data collation and interpretation.
“I chose the Melbourne School of Land and Environment because it provided me the opportunity to study a wide range of subjects, from agricultural economics to applied animal physiology and plant pathology from some of the leading academics in these fields,” she said.
For Zoe, the passion her lecturers and tutors bring to the classroom has also been of great benefit as she adjusts to University life.
“One thing I didn’t expect was to be challenged to understand and reason issues from others’ perspectives. It’s definitely a strength of the Melbourne Model in allowing you to take subjects outside your discipline that challenge you to see the world and issues from different angles.
“My favourite subjects are the applied agriculture subjects, from economics through to genetics, because they fuse the theory with practical applications and help me to apply what I’m learning in class to the wider world.”
The flexibility of the degree has enabled Zoe to gain real-world experience alongside her studies.
“I am currently working at a pilot project with Grain and Graze, helping with data collation and interpretation. The best thing about my job is being involved in the industry while working from home (Melbourne) with flexible hours that fit around my studies.”
As a current recipient of the Rural Finance Undergraduate Scholarship, Zoe has been able to utilise the opportunities The value of real-world experience STUDENT PROFILE ZOE CREELMAN it has provided her with to extend her studies and career goals.
“The scholarship’s helped connect me with an extensive network of innovative people involved in the agricultural industry. The financial aspect of the scholarship has also greatly decreased the pressure to work during semester, allowing me more time for my studies and other extracurricular activities,” she said.
“I’m passionate about the development of agriculture both in Australia and overseas, in a way that is sustainable and economical. This may lead me down the path of research and extension.”
