Welcome from Professor Iven Mareels, Dean, Melbourne School of Engineering

  • Here at the Melbourne School of Engineering (MSE) we aspire to be world-class in all our endeavours. It is pleasing to see that others see us as world-class as well, and indeed rate MSE as Australia’s leading provider of engineering and IT education and research, as underscored by the main international rankings.

To maintain and improve our research, teaching and engagement activities we recognise the importance of working closely with alumni, industry and friends. Your support and involvement inspires our students and graduates to excel in their chosen field, and become socially responsible leaders in the community.

The past months have seen significant growth in the School. Approximately 1,100 students entered our Masters programs and another 600 new students included engineering majors within their undergraduate degrees. Encouragingly, approximately 26% of these are female, which is an increase on previous years but still highlights an area of continued focus and need.

In light of the present economic conditions in Australia, it is clear that MSE’s pursuit for societal impact through innovation and wealth creation opportunities more generally is essential for our nation and indeed the world. To this end MSE is a strong driver in the University’s Carlton Connect agenda, and collaborates with colleagues across the University, and with industry and government partners.

I am delighted to share with you a small summary of some of our recent progress and initiatives through this update. We always enjoy hearing from our alumni, so please do contact us and share your news.
