Considering literacy for plurilingual children

21 October 2024, Learning and Teaching Building, Monash University

Thank you to Associate Professor Ruth Fielding of the School of Curriculum, Teaching and Inclusive Education at Monash University for inviting me (Rafaela Cleeve Gerkens) to be part of a panel sharing what our work means for literacy learning for plurilingual children. It was a fantastic opportunity to share my work around the role of the arts in translanguaging with a thoughtful and passionate audience of researchers, teachers and parents both in person and online. I was honoured to be part of the panel alongside Dr Jacqueline D’Warte of Western Sydney University and Dr Hilary Smith of ANU, Massey University and ALANZ who shared the ways in which their research is supporting schools, teachers and students to challenge the monolingual mindset and to tap into students’ funds of knowledge, identity and language.
