About us

ASOP is a student-led organization at the University of Melbourne. Our goal is to create and maintain a community for African students enrolled in the University of Melbourne. Some of the activities we offer are mentorship, networking opportunities, and other support services. The program ran in 2023, and we are currently running our second session from June – October 2024.

Our 2024 committee members:

Coordinator: Victoria Mercy Kataike

Mercy is a third year PhD student in Radiology studying the significance of advanced MR imaging processing techniques in understanding cell recovery from ischemic stroke. Originally from Uganda, Mercy is passionate about seeing African students come together, celebrate one another and inspire one another.

Co-Coordinator: Daniel Dodoo

Daniel Dodoo is a chemical engineering PhD student at the University of Melbourne, and collaborating with CSIRO as part of his research. He is also an Erasmus Mundus Scholar who obtained his masters in Europe. Daniel originates from Ghana and is extremely enthusiastic about Ghana’s jollof rice. He loves making connections between African students, the university, and the African communities.

Secretary: Yawovi Assimadi

Yawovi is a first year Accounting and Finance student studying a Bachelor of Commerce degree. Yawovi enjoys staying active through sports and likes to experiment with new recipes and flavours from different cultures. He is passionate about fostering stronger connections between Africans from the continent and those in the diaspora.

Events Co-ordinator: Lushomo Chinganya

Lushomo is a first year biomedicine student and a Hansen Scholar recipient at the University of Melbourne. She loves playing soccer or enjoying music when she gets the chance. Having grown up in Australia with Zambian heritage, Lushomo is passionate about connecting African students to each other and their culture.

Outreach Co-ordinator I: Dorcas Serwaa

Dorcas is a PhD student at the Department of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Newborn Health, University of Melbourne. Her project (MySurvivorCare) seeks to improve the management of menopause in cancer survivorship through a patient-driven stepped care model approach. Dorcas is interested in fostering togetherness, sense of belonging and seeing the African community in the university progress.

Off Parkville Representative: Elizabeth Galus Mgawe

Elizabeth Galus Mgawe, from Tanzania Master of Agricultural science majoring in food sustainability Passionate about cooking, I would love to connect our african community through delicious meals. Home away from home.
