Mentor: Prof Julie Simpson, School of Population and Global Health
This week Julie gave us some tips on how to develop research independence. Below is a summary of the key points:
- In your PhD, try to apply for travel grants that you can include in the awards section of your CV.
- Tailor your supervision style to each PhD student / postdoc.
- In your postdoc position, try to gain some independence from your supervisor by having a small side project where you publish without them (e.g. with the other postdocs in the group).
- When you have an established group, try to manage the size of group with some levels of hierarchy.
