Mentor: Prof Julie Simpson, School of Population and Global Health

This week Julie gave us some tips on how to develop research independence. Below is a summary of the key points:

  • In your PhD, try to apply for travel grants that you can include in the awards section of your CV.
  • Tailor your supervision style to each PhD student / postdoc.
  • In your postdoc position, try to gain some independence from your supervisor by having a small side project where you publish without them (e.g. with the other postdocs in the group).
  • When you have an established group, try to manage the size of group with some levels of hierarchy.
