Mandarin Teaching Module 5
DESCRIPTION: This module is designed for participants to find out more about their partners with a focus on their best friend. Teachers will need to prepare participants for the necessary vocabulary and language skills required for this module. This Module contains three tasks for each school; for the Australia participants, they need to find out who their partner’s best friend is, the two activities they both often do together, and three things to describe the personality of their partner’s best friend. For the China participants, they need to find out who their partner’s best friend is, the two activities they both often do together, and three things to describe the appearance of their partner’s best friend.
DURATION: 6 days (任务期限: 6 天)
AUSTRALIA PARTICIPANTS:
Cool! Now you have got to know a little bit about your partner’s family and school. Your next task is to find out about their best friend. Please do a little detective work to find out who your partner’s best friend is and two activities they often do together; also, ask him/her to tell you three things about the personality of their best friend. This time please make sure you ask questions and reply to your partner in MANDARIN only.
OUTCOME: When you have gathered all this information, please write a paragraph in English about your partner.
DUE DATE: You need to find out all the information by DD/MM! Good luck!
CHINA PARTICIPANTS:

TEACHER’S NOTE
-In this module, participants are to use their target language to perform the tasks, i.e. the Australia participants use Mandarin and the China participants use English.
-Unlike previous tasks, the tasks contained in this module are nearly the same for both groups, except one of them where they need to use three words to describe their best friend’s personality (for the Australian participants) and appearance (for the Chinese participants). While participants might share too much information prematurely, this is less likely in this module due to more challenging requirement of having to use the target language.
-The duration of this module was originally set for 4 days, but was extended to 7 days due the lag in communication between both groups, which has always been a big problem in setting up a realistic timeframe for each module. The duration has been modified to 6 days here to allow sufficient time for completing the tasks.
