Mandarin Teaching Module 3
DESCRIPTION: This module is designed for participants to get to know their assigned partner. Teachers will need to prepare participants for the necessary vocabulary and language skills required for this module. This Module contains three tasks for each school; for the Australia participants, they need to find out what animal their partner likes the most, what job the father of their partner has, and what fruits their partner’s mother likes the most. For the China participants, they need to find out what fruits their partner likes the most, what job their partner’s mother has, and what animal their partner’s father likes the most.
DURATION: 5 days (任务期限: 5 天)
AUSTRALIA PARTICIPANTS:
How exciting that you have been paired up with a partner in China! Now, it’s time to get to know your partner as much as you can. Please try you best to find out what your partner’s favourite animal is and why they like this animal, what his/her father does for a living, and what his/her mother’s favourite fruit is. Please make sure you ask questions and reply to your partner in ENGLISH only.
OUTCOME: When you have gathered all this information, please write a paragraph in English about your partner’s family.
DUE DATE: You need to complete this task by DD/MM! Have fun!
CHINA PARTICIPANTS
恭喜你顺利地和澳洲的学生完成了配对的手续。下一步就是开始认识你的伙伴。你的第一个任务就是想办法查出你的伙伴最喜欢的水果是什么、他/她的妈妈做什么工作,他/她的爸爸最喜欢的动物和为什么喜欢这个动物的原因。请千万记得只能用中文提问和答复你的伙伴所提出的任何问题。
成果: 请将你所得到的资料整合起来并用中文编写成一段有关介绍你的伙伴家庭的短文。
任务期限: 你得在X月X号以前完成这些任务哦!

TEACHER’S NOTE
-In this module, participants are to use their first language to perform the tasks, i.e. the Australia participants use English and the China participants use Mandarin.
-Young learners tend to volunteer information without being asked, which might limit their partners’ opportunities to use the target language to form questions. For example, when the task is to ask how many people are in the partner’s family, a learner might already provide this information for their own family, thereby taking away their partner’s opportunity to formulate the question. Therefore, these tasks are intentionally designed differently between the Australian and Chinese participants in order to avoid unprompted sharing of information between students.
-Time differences and technology limitations may make it hard to quantify the completion time of each task into number of sessions. The initial duration for this module was set for 3 days, but we found that unlike adults who receive notifications from social media whenever there is new message, primary school students don’t have access to this function. Therefore, this project relies entirely on teacher’s constant reminders and students remembering to check messages on Edmodo. The module duration has been set for 5 days now to ensure it gives teachers and students enough time.
