In the second visit of the MEM Industry Visit Series held on December 5th, 2022, the MEM Student Community had the chance to witness the current progress of the future Parkville Station. The Parkville Station will soon be one of five world-class stations that are constructed underground. In this opportunity, the students were also allowed to visit some sections of the nine-kilometre rail twin tunnels and the Royal Parade underpass. Throughout the tour, MEM students were accompanied by Dan Young, Communications & Stakeholder Engagement Coordinator of the project.
This event was attended by 9 graduate students and 1 staff.

Being the chairperson of the second visit of MEM Industry Visit Series has once again allowed me to communicate and collaborate with real industry professionals. In this opportunity, I am really proud to see that the MEM Student Committee is able to provide a chance for students to witness the on-going activities of the Metro Tunnel Project in Parkville and allow them to gain valuable insights on how the construction of underground stations and tunnels works.
Syauqi Amani (student commencing S1 2022, chairperson of Industry Visit event)
The metro tunnel is a big infrastructure project that allows MEM students to know a bit more about the process and activities necessary to accomplish a project in this magnitude. It was definitely a great experience that will lead us to improve our careers.
Fabricio Sarmiento (student commencing S2 2022, chairperson of Industry Visit event)
Mr. Dan led us through the station’s facilities that range up to 30 metres below the ground. Engineering practice and knowledge was heavily implemented on the project site, and the enormous scale of the project genuinely surprised us. As the project is located in Parkville, we think the students of the University of Melbourne will gain many benefits when the station is open for public.
