Behind the Scenes

Meet Your Peers

MEM student community was formally formed in Semester 1, 2022. After recruiting initial members, the community met at the end of March for the first time. It took the community some time to find the track and worked towards the shared goal.
The inaugural event, Meet Your Peers, was delivered on 11th May 2022. Even though it was very close to the end of the semester, more than 20 students were gathered and enjoyed the night. It was a great opening for MEM student community, and two chairpersons of “Meet Your Peers” event would like to share some thoughts with the cohort.

The committee performed as the host of activities ranging from developing the idea of the project to executing the planned activities. As one of the Project chairpersons, my primary responsibility included the preparation of the food budget for the event. This involved visits to supermarkets and making estimates of the possible number of attendees.

Throughout the different stages of planning and executing the event, one feeling was common amongst us all – we all wanted to contribute to the MEM community in any way possible. We all had faced various issues while studying this degree, and we had different aspirations for our careers. What we lacked was a common platform to express our doubts and forge our ambitions. The MEM community gave us that platform and led to us forming a common bond.

Online learning reduces the communication opportunities within the cohort of MEM. The first thing that jumped to my mind was to re-establish the relationships with my peers when I had the chance to go to campus. To this end, the committee members met on a weekly base and made the plan for this event. I was also involved in drafting the invitation letters and organizing the event to make participants more engaged. I was very happy to see that every participant enjoyed the conversations with others and connected with their peers. Even as the organizer, I met many new friends and gained valuable thoughts through their unique experiences. It was an incredible experience for me and also indicated the infinite possibilities of this community.
