MEM to Project Manager

Mauricio Gutierrez is a project manager with extensive site-based experience in Engineering, Procurement and Construction projects (EPC contracts) working on Joint Venture schemes for large-scale infrastructure projects in the transport, airport, oil & gas and energy sectors.

Mauricio had over 10 years of experience working as a civil project engineer in Brazil. To achieve the transition from a project engineer to a project manager, he chose to take the Master of Engineering Management course at the University of Melbourne in 2017. After graduation, Mauricio is working in a Melbourne-based construction company and is promoted to the position of project manager very soon.

It is a privilege to have Mauricio share his story about MEM course and give advice to our current students.

“The MEM course helped me become a more complete engineer/project manager by providing me with an in-depth understanding of all project management principles. The course approached important topics ranging from feasibility studies, to procurement practices and decision-making all the way to the delivery of complex engineering projects. This was done by engaging in real-world cases and studies of recent and past projects completed, which provided me with the skills, technical knowledge and confidence required to be a better manager.

“As an advice to current students, I would encourage them to take advantage of the networking and vast knowledge of the academic staff (professors, guest speakers and alumni). Additionally, make the most of all the group activities and presentations to help build the confidence to communicate and work effectively in real word scenarios.”
