Asylum Seeker Resource Centre: 15th anniversary

Wednesday June 8, 2016, marks the 15th anniversary of the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre. The Melbourne University Studies Program congratulates the ASRC on this occasion. The Centre has, remarkably, helped over 13,000 asylum seekers and refugees over the years. Much of the work has focused on empowering asylum seekers to tell their stories, to study, update their skills, create businesses, and above all, come out of their isolation to a place of welcome. Currently the Centre helps over 3000 asylum seekers. Again, the emphasis is on empowerment. The ASRC is an expression of the ancient ideal of philoxenia—extending the hand of friendship, providing hospitality, and a sense of belonging. Without the Centre, many more asylum seekers would be experiencing isolation and a sense of despair. Kon Karpanagiotidis, the founder and CEO of the Centre, has marked the occasion with these words. The MRSP support his words and the winter appeal, and post this link to his statement.
