How to access resources from outside the UoM Library
Search the University of Melbourne Library collection for the materials you need. In the event that you cannot find what you are looking for we have a number of ways to assist you with accessing resources.
Always check online first:
Academic materials are often available online. If you find an article behind a paywall, you might be able to access it for free via the Lean Library browser extension.
Further options:
Inter-library loan services
Inter-library loan services can help you access books, journal articles, and other resources unavailable in our library collections. These services are available to all University of Melbourne staff and students.
There are several ways to submit a request. Including via the libraries: online forms web page, or through the library website link from the catalogue, Find It@Unimelb. It is also possible to make a request via your Lean Library browser extension.
Keep an eye out for a notification when your request is ready. Your requested materials will be delivered to your email address or designated pickup location.
CAVAL Reciprocal Borrowing Program
The CAVAL reciprocal borrowing program is a Victorian program which allows staff and students to borrow in person from participating universities and institutions.
To enroll at another library, you must present at the service desk with proof of current enrollment from your home institution. This can be done by:
- Presenting a current student ID card, photo ID, and proof of your contact details.
- Providing a letter that confirms your current enrollment (with photo ID and proof of your contact details)
- Demonstrating your ability to log into your institution’s student portal.
It may be possible to register online at some libraries. If you need assistance using an unfamiliar library, ask at the service desk.
Borrowing from International Universities
The ULANZ borrowing scheme allows staff and students to borrow in person from other participating universities in Australia or New Zealand. You will need to register at the participating library to borrow books. Students can use a student ID card or other photo ID plus proof of current enrollment. Staff members need a photo ID card and proof of current employment.
If you’re a student or staff member and wish to borrow at an international university outside of New Zealand, we can request borrowing privileges on your behalf. Please visit one of our Service Desks, or ask us via Library Chat, so we can put you in touch with one of our librarians who can write a letter of indemnity for you to take with you.
