Zotero and EndNote updates for researchers
For those already using reference management software like Zotero or EndNote, you know how flexible and powerful the software can be. Catch up with some recent updates to keep you working seamlessly and making the most of your software.
EndNote
EndNote is a subscription software that can help to organise and manage your references supported by the University of Melbourne.
Major announcement! EndNote 2025 is coming very soon!
Don’t pay for an upgrade, the library will provide an update to EndNote users.
Staff will be able to access the upgraded version via the Software Centre early May.
Students will be able to download from Re:Cite when it becomes available – watch this space for further updates
Zotero
Zotero is free and easy to use open source reference management software supported by the University of Melbourne..
Managing attachments (and those pesky cloud storage limits) in Zotero
Zotero fans may have noticed that Zotfile, which was super helpful in allowing Zotero users to save PDFs to a cloud-based folder, is no longer being developed and is not compatible with Zotero 7.
Zotero users should have been automatically updated to Zotero 7. Check your library for updates and make sure you’re up to date.
Missing Zotfile’s storage workaround?
Zotmoov is a third-party plug-in that automatically moves attachments and links them to your library for ease of access. Attachments can also be manually moved by right clicking on an item.
Note: the .xpi file will not install in Firefox. We tested it in Chrome. To install:
- Download the .xpi file from GitHub
- Open Zotero
- Go to Tools – Plugins
- In the Manage Your Plugins Page, select the cog icon
- Go to Install plugin from file
Zotero and mobile devices
You can add to your library and create citations and references using the iOS app or the Zotero web library on your mobile device.
Android users will have to wait for an app – beta testing is underway.
Upcoming Training:
Still unsure when and how you’d use these features? Attend one of our upcoming webinars for researchers and learn how to take full advantage of your reference management software of choice. Sign up today:
EndNote: taking it further – April 29th, 12-1pm
Zotero: taking it further – April 29th, 5-6pm
We recommend our alternative Beginner sessions for those new to reference management software. The Options for managing references guide will help you to determine which software program best meets your needs and get you started with downloading the software. The Library provides a Zotero guide for UoM users.
There will be time during the webinar for questions and answers. Please note sessions will not be recorded.
