Chelsea Bassett

I’m a recent Master of Science graduate from the Kolev Analytical and Environmental Chemistry Research Group. I have spent the past two years endeavouring to make water quality monitoring accessible by developing cheap, easy to use paper-based sensors for environmental contaminants. Since studying with Jenny I have given my completion seminar, and written and submitted my major research thesis. Without Jenny’s ‘Communication for Research Scientists’ subject, I think these two tasks would have been 100% more difficult; particularly my completion seminar.

I have NEVER enjoyed public speaking; however, being required to give impromptu presentations about my research in Jenny’s classes and watching the recordings really helped me to identify what I needed to work on, as well as what I was actually already quite good at, which is often a lot harder to see in yourself! I gained a lot of confidence in my ability to talk about my research through the various tasks Jenny set, and I learnt a lot of valuable tools and tricks for writing and speaking that I have been able to apply to numerous exciting opportunities, including job applications, conference presentations, and (fingers crossed) journal publications.

If you’re here thinking about taking one of Jenny’s subjects – do it – you definitely won’t regret it!
