Feature Friday: The 5 Level Challenge

So by now you’ve probably heard of the 3MT, the recent #PostItNotePhD, and now I bring to you the next challenge in SciComm, the 5 Level Challenge!

This is where scientists explain their research on 5 different levels of complexity:
  1. To a child
  2. To a teen
  3. To a undergrad student
  4. To a grad student
  5. To an expert in the field
This started on WIRED, where there is a collection of videos of experts explaining concepts at these five levels.

But this has also taken off on Instagram, using the hashtag #5levelchallenge, where people are talking about their research, a concept from their field or just something they are passionate about.

It sounds easy, but trying to reformulate your research so that you can reach your audience on a level that speaks to them can be really tricky!

I won’t hold you up too much on this one, but encourage you to go forth and explore the ways people craft their messages for their audiences, and suggest you give it a go! Are you up for the challenge?
