Welcome to the homepage of the Australian Research Council funded research project Constructing Social Hierarchy.
The project seeks to develop new philosophical tools for understanding the persistence of social injustice. It aims to integrate anti-individualist approaches to mind, language, and action explanation in order to better understand the ways in which social hierarchies are created and maintained, often as the unintended outcome of the actions of multiple agents. Having developed this theoretical understanding, the project will address the practical question of remedy, with a focus on race and gender. Through media engagement, the project will also aim to enrich the public discussion of hate speech, Indigenous/Non-Indigenous relations, and gender equality.
The Constructing Social Hierarchy Project is holding a number of workshops and conferences over the life of the project:
- Melbourne Workshop 2018: October 12
- Melbourne Conference 2019: July 15-17
- MIT Workshop 2019: December 6
- Melbourne Conference 2020
