Western District Percussion
A series of workshops and performances were delivered by MCM alumni ensemble Speak Percussion in four schools/districts in the Western District of Victoria: Stawell, Hamilton, Warrnambool and Portland.
The ensemble consisting of MCM alumni Eugene Ughetti (BMusPerfHons 2002), Leah Scholes (MMusPerf 2007) and Matthias Schack-Arnott (BMusPerf 2010) conducted the workshops and performances in five schools in regional Victoria. They gained valuable experience from the touring schedule and presenting schools-oriented performances and workshops.
Over one hundred students took part in the interactive percussion workshops involving concepts of phasing, examining Steve Reich’s Clapping Music, and introducing music making with found objects. In addition, over 200 students at two schools attended a performance from the percussion trio, including a question-and-answer session at the end.
Music teachers and students responded positively to the workshops and performances, and expressed a desire to host future visits from the MCM. Many of the teachers said how valuable it was for the students to be exposed to music that they wouldn’t normally hear, and that the workshops reinforced concepts that they had touched on in their music classes.
