Event: The ‘Fake News’ Pub Lunch

The Centre for AI and Digital Ethics (CAIDE) and The Digital Studio have put together The ‘Fake News’ Pub Lunch. From the event description:

“The Pub Lunch is a forum which aims to recreate the atmosphere of an informal talk – two experts present their work and half an hour is left for discussion and idea-sharing amongst the researchers and the audience. Professor Jeannie Paterson, Co-Director for the Centre for AI and Digital Ethics will host the discussion.

For this Pub Lunch we will speak on the topic of Fake News, the algorithms that promote it and the impact on society in the days before the 2020 American elections.

Our first expert Dr Fabio Mattioli, a lecturer in Social Anthropology at the School of Social and Political Sciences and an Associate Researcher at CAIDE, will speak about his research on the creation of fake news in Macedonia. His research asks: how do humans and algorithms collaborate to produce fake news? What economic factors shape them?

Our second expert, Dr Marc Cheong, a Senior Research Fellow for Digital Ethics at CAIDE from the School of Computing and Information Systems, will present his research on the interaction between the social web and online social networks, including the use of metadata and network structures, to explain user behavior.”

It looks like the Pub Lunches will be a regular meetup at CAIDE with a great informal atmosphere.
