News and upcoming events for June 2024

What’s new, and what’s coming up at the University of Melbourne for researchers and the research support community.

Mid-year break for Researcher@Library webinars

The Researcher@Library webinar series has wrapped up for Semester One, including 12 webinars supported by 23 library staff. We’ll be back next semester, but in the meantime, you can find resources on the Researcher@Library research support page and the online resources page.

Increased borrowing limit for graduate researchers and staff

The Library has increased borrowing limits for graduate researchers and professional staff – they can now borrow up to 2,000 items at a time!

All UoM staff and students can also now borrow 28-day items for 90 days, so no need to rush through your reading list. 7 day and high use loan periods remain the same.  There’s more info about borrowing from the Library here.

The Reel Impact Prize

The Reel Impact challenges researchers to succinctly describe the impact of their research to a non-specialist audience in 60 seconds.

UoM academics are invited to attend an introductory workshop on 6 June 2024 to hear from research translation experts and learn more about Reel Impact. Express your interest via the form here.

Text recycling and self-plagiarism in research

The University has released a statement on text recycling and self-plagiarism in research, providing guidance on acceptable and unacceptable uses. Read through the statement here and find out where you can access support and advice.

NTRO Integration with Figshare

The submission of Non-Traditional Research Outputs (NTROs) is now integrated with Melbourne Figshare! This allows Melbourne academics to deposit their NTROs via ServiceNow. It will then be quality checked, a record created in Melbourne Figshare, and automatically registered in Elements, the Researcher Dashboard and Find an Expert.

Find out more on the Research Outputs website here.

New guidance on research indicators

The Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) aims to end the misuse of the Journal Impact Factor (JIF) in the evaluation of research. DORA has just released a new guidance document applying to the h-index, citation counts, and altmetrics.

It doesn’t assume any prior knowledge of research metrics – read it here.

It would be helpful to have your article titles as bullet point clickable options under ‘In the 05/29/2024 edition’ so we have a preview of what is in the newsletter

Hi Shaie – great idea! The plug-in that allows for linking within a post is disabled unfortunately, but I’ll work to get it back for future posts 🙂
