Is this a hoax?

I got an email from a David Charles today with the following message:

From: “David Charles” < charles @ 800studentjobs.com>

Dear Student,

I would like to offer you an opportunity for earning extra money.
Get Paid To Give Your Opinion.
Believe it or not, your opinion is worth a paycheck.

Companies spend billions of dollars a year trying to convince consumers to buy their
products and services. Understanding consumer behavior helps companies improve their
products and services and make more money. Your participation in giving your
opinions on different research surveys directly influences the way companies develop
products, services and policies, to better meet the needs of consumers.

Knowing that they won’t get our help for free, companies are willing to pay people
like you good money (up to $100 an hour) for their opinions, because they know they
will generate even more profits for themselves.

Companies will pay you $5 to $75 just to fill out simple online surveys from the
comfort of your own home.
Get paid $50 to $150 for participating in focus group panels for 30 to 60 minutes.
Get paid to take phone surveys and you can earn as much as $120 an hour.
Participate in a focus group in your area and earn up to $600 for half a day.
Have new products sent to you before they are released on the market.
Share your opinion, and get paid, without changing your life at all.

If you are interested just reply to my email!

Best Regards,
David Charles

Sure it sounds good. But his email address looks suspicious (I couldn’t find this studentjobs.com site) and perhaps the more important question is: how did he have my uni email in the first place?

Any thoughts?

Cheers,

  1. i got that email too. you can get paid to do surveys ect….but i wouldn’t reply to this specific email as i believe it’s a scam. when it sounds too good to be true it usually is….and in the internet world, i live by that philosophy.

if you’re interested in earning some money through things like that, legit jobs do exist and are often advertised via the university careers website or around campus i.e. get paid to be part of a psychology experiment ect.

what you get paid is usually a lot less than what that email suggest though. usually around $10-$20 is about average for 1 – 2 hours of your time.

it’s usually more time-efficient to just work a part time job.

  2. Yep, hoax. I get, like, 10 of these a day because some idiot sold my email address to the spammers.

  3. I’ve already had a job.

I’m just curious about this email since I really want to know how the spammers got a hold of my uni email.

  4. I get heaps of spam, and this would be one type. I just ignore them, if what they were advertising was really that good then I’m sure they wouldn’t need to send it out to random people rather than any target audience.
