“There’s a sucker born every minute.” (Suzanne)

Sometimes I wish I just did law. Or just music. That would make life much easier, the former more so than the latter. Then I wouldn’t have to shunt back and forth between the two all the time.

It probably wouldn’t really be much less in terms of raw work. But it would really help to be able to focus on one thing at a time, and actually stay on top of it all, instead of constantly feeling like I’m treading water in a mad attempt to stay afloat in two things. I suppose it’s akin to trying to run forward when you have two feet going in opposite directions – sooner or later you end up falling on your bum.

Census date passed on Monday. That means I can’t drop my overload without wasting $749. Damn it.

Also, I think I am the kind of person who gets stressed over all the things I have to do, and then tries to get over it by picking up new things to do. What is currently going on in my head is this: “Well, I have five assignments, one of which is worth 100% of my grade, a test, and a take home exam between Weeks 10 and 12. Maybe if I sign up to play in the pit orchestra for the Sweeney Todd production by the Throwback Players, the fun I have playing for the musical will help to relieve the stress of all those assignments.” What will actually happen during Weeks 10 to 12 if I follow that line of reasoning will basically be this: “Holy cheese, I have five assignments due and I can’t work on them because I have rehearsal every day for this damn musical.”

The sad thing is that even knowing the logic (or lack thereof) behind my decisions, I’m still tempted to sign up. It gets me every single goddamn time.

  1. This is the real world unfortunately. I do have similar problems too. Sometimes i run away from the stress and indulge myself in games or tv. :p
it is all about will power i guess in the end.

  2. It’s hard to balance things…but your own sanity requires that you do – and the only key is to sacrifice some things. No one can do everything and the consequence of trying to do everything is that you achieve almost nothing because your energy is spread so thinly across all the different activities – then not only do you disappoint yourself, but you may also let down others if the activities are team-based. (I have been one of those people let down by a team-member who took on too much in their life).

I’m a firm believe of doing just a couple of things but doing them well, if not better than anyone else.

You need to decide what is most important to your long term happiness/future. If you need good uni marks for the future, then uni needs to come first…if your extra-curricular is what will bring you a better future, you should focus on that.

There is so much I would have loved to do at uni, but never had time for….however life is long and there are always more opportunities down the track.

    Good luck!

  3. Where there is a way, there is a way. ^^

    I believe in you, Suzanne.

With that said, the best option may involve certain sacrifices (e.g. dropping Law as you are contemplating). I know my comment arrives a bit too late and you have already made up your mind by now. I’m interested in knowing the outcomes if you’re willing to share. =D

    Till next time.

  4. Hey Suzanne,

I just happened to click the link on the University of Melbourne website. Glad to know a blogger who is doing music in University of Melbourne.

Ok. Just to introduce myself, I am Alphonsus, from Singapore. I will be going to University of Melbourne to do Bachelor of Music in July (piano major). Would like to know more about life in the music faculty in melbourne.

    Thanks.

    Alphonsus (fonzie)
