Question Needing Answers (Sophie)

Please answer everyone!

How are you finding second semester compared to last? Are you enjoying it more, or less? Have your thoughts about your course or the university itself changed? Be specific.

I’ll write my answer up in week or so.

  1. Semester 2 was going really really really well for me (million times better than Semester 1)… but I got some bad news, now its not so good.
Semester 1 has a massive learning curve, but after that you know where to go, how to study, and things are just much easier.

  2. Pretty busy, then got into some lazy habbit/(try to rush work, do short cut to finish study on time, acutally it destroys my love of studying)
SO stick with the basic. 🙂

    enjoy learning

  3. The novelty of uni has worn off for me, 1st semester was good cos it was all new and different but now it’s just part of the routine, although i am still enjoying it a lot. I have slacked off so much more this semester; just can’t be bothered and other things to worry about, like jez being sick, but the workload seems easier maybe because i am more used to this way of learning and studying. Although it’s lost a bit of its sparkle, i’m still enjoying my course and uni life and i’m happy with that!

hope its all going ok with you too.

  4. It’s not quite so scary as it was last semester, but still terrifying at best. There really should be an adopt-a-first-year program.

I like my subjects better this semester, but I’m still feeling like I have ruined things. I’m such a perfectionist.. when things don’t go completely to plan, I’m likely to just stop trying. Things haven’t gone exactly to plan, I’ve been sick enough to warrant bed rest at least three times since the semester began and had a bit of a family crisis.. but oh well, I’m *trying* not to let these things ruin it all.

I think I’m appreciating the university more now though.. gosh, I don’t know what I’m talking about! How about I survive this semester then I’ll try to compare and analyse the two halves of the year…

  5. Hey Soph –
I think that there are a number of transitions that people need to deal with when they go to Uni that tend to settle over second semester.

    1. It’s Uni. OK, it’s a bigger deal than school, but it’s not that important. It’s not that important, and the world won’t spin backwards if you don’t walk away with H1s. Sure, it’s awesome to do well, and I’m not saying don’t study, but study because you want to, not because you feel a guilty obligation to do so.

    2. Let’s not kid around here by being all PC – Melbourne is, let’s face it, a fairly elite institution which not everyone can get into, which means that all of a sudden the average standard jumps by a few light years from school.

This (number two) has been the major difference for me (sickness aside); that suddenly I have gone from being near the front of the pack all my school life to suddenly being somewhere near the back of the peloton. I think there’s a slightly egoistical and proud element to myself that won’t let myself be any less than the best if I feel I can reach it and so this semester I feel so much more… driven, almost in a determined and powerful way, to do well. I can’t rely simply on my talent anymore not because it’s not enough but instead because the Uni assumes that everyone who enters is gifted to some degree. (I apologise for sounding very up-myself about all Melbourne Uni students but I can’t think of a better way to word it). I can’t describe it within 100% accuracy… it’s a burning passion to win, I think. It’s time to hit the books, guys.

  6. Oh yeh… in addition to that, I might just add that I am REALLY enjoying Uni as I have all year. Sickness aside, everything seems to have been falling into place.

  7. Yes! We do! PXW told me that he had an inkling it was the same day.. but wow! That’s strange, and it throws astrology out the window – we’re so different.
