GIES Badminton Tournament 2024 – Tournament Guidelines
The GIES Badminton tournament will be held on 7th March 2024 from 2 pm onwards at the Nona Lee Sports Centre at the University of Melbourne.
This event is open to all RHD students and staff of the Department of Infrastructure Engineering at the University of Melbourne.
Categories
- The tournament will have separate categories for men’s doubles, mixed doubles and women’s doubles.
- Participants may register for several categories if desired.
- Prizes will be awarded for 1st and 2nd places in each category.
Registration
- Registration will open on the 23rd of February and can be done through the Eventbrite portal. You will not be able to register on the day of the tournament. Please include both player details.
- To ensure commitment and minimize the inconvenience of absentees on the day of the tournament, a deposit of $10 will be required for each team registration. Upon arrival and registration on the day of the tournament, the deposited amount will be returned to the team. Teams failing to attend their matches without prior notification will forfeit their deposit.
- The deadline for registrations is the 4th of March. The match schedule will be circulated to the attendees on the 5th of March.
Schedule
- A detailed schedule will be provided to all participants before the tournament.
- Participants must arrive at least 15 minutes before their scheduled match time.
- Matches will start promptly as per the schedule.
- If the participant does not arrive after 10 min from the scheduled start time, they will be forfeited from the game.
Format
- The tournament will follow a single-elimination format.
- Matches will be played in a best-of-three set format.
- Semi-finals and Final will be played in a best-of-three set format.
- Each set will be played up to 21 points, with a two-point advantage to win.
- Players will be given 5 min for warm-up before each game.
Equipment
- Participants must bring their badminton racket. Rackets can be hired at the reception of the Nona Lee Sports Centre but will be subject to availability.
- Shuttlecocks will be provided by the organizers.
- Proper attire and non-marking shoes are mandatory.
All spectators and cheer squads are welcome!

A short greeting of each other from our new workplace /home, sharing news along with doing a couple of funny activities, with a prize, are the best way to feel connected to the community. In the meanwhile, we have invited a couple of our students who have recently submitted their PhD thesis to give their priceless time to us and share their PhD experiences and answer our questions in this matter!
