Communicating and presenting on your work are key skills for all researchers. In case you missed it (ICYMI), here are recordings of recent workshops on these skills, presented by designer Anitra Nottingham and communications trainer, Simon Clews.

Presentation design for researchers

Online workshop held on Thursday 16 July, 3:00pm – 4:00pm

Watch the recording of this interactive online workshop presented by Anitra Nottingham for an introduction into design basics including using typefaces, creating information graphics, and how to find interesting images to engage an audience in your research. This is useful for creating slide presentations, designing academic posters, and for those entering the Visualise Your Thesis (VYT) Competition.

Anitra Nottingham is currently a Senior Learning Experience Designer at RMIT Online, and was previously the Online Director and Co-Chair of the School of Graphic Design and Digital Media at the Academy of Art University (AAU) San Francisco. She has taught graphic design since 2002, and has created and taught various classes on research methods, information design, branding, typography, and design history.

Short, sharp and to the point: Bringing your research to life

Online workshop held on Tuesday 14 July, 3:00pm – 4:00pm 

Watch the recording of this interactive online workshop for ideas on where to find the stories in your research, how to bring them to life, and how to communicate them to a non-specialist audience. Whether it’s for the Visualise Your Thesis competition, the Three Minute Thesis competition, or even just a presentation in the lab, these days researchers must to be able to tell their research stories and sell their ideas in exciting, compelling, dynamic ways in relatively short periods of time.

Simon Clews is a writer, editor, event organiser and specialist trainer in written and oral communication. He delivers a 1-hour interactive workshop on engaging scholarly communication useful to researchers from all disciplines and at all career stages.

Recordings of this skills workshops are available to University of Melbourne students and staff only. Workshops were organised for the University of Melbourne’s local Visualise Your Thesis Competition (VYT). VYT is an international competition that challenges graduate researchers to present their research in a 60 second, eye-catching digital display.
