A MAJOR Change (Phoebe)

The transition from a First to Second Year student has not been so much as a leap as a baby step.

However, maybe that’s due to the fact I haven’t actually started classes to recognise any notable differences. One thing that is different though, is my new-found awareness that I need to start taking my future, both short and long-term more seriously now.

So I’m no longer a first year, and man does it feel weird. I’m no longer the youngest who can be forgiven for not fully understanding all the uni stuff. This is where it all gets serious *insert straight face here*.

But in all honesty, I don’t feel any different. The only real change has been my choice of major.

I decided, after enrolling in my major, selecting electives etc. that a Criminology major was just not for me. Instead I wanted to do it as a minor and major in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics. Anyway, more to the point I started to freak when I couldn’t make these MAJOR changes on my study plan (yes, lame pun intended). So after many angsty thoughts and thinking that I was doomed to complete a major I was not completely happy with, I went and visited the Arts Student Centre (which, FYI has moved to Old Physics, Building 128). They were über helpful and before I knew it, I was going to be majoring in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics!!

If you are ever unsure about your study plan or want to change your major, I strongly recommend you head down to your Student Centre and talk to the people down there.

There are so many ways to access help within the uni, half of them I don’t know as much about as I probably should. However, after having such a positive experience, all I can say is if you need a helping hand, don’t be afraid to ask for it.
