3 Weeks in the life of… (Gianina)

Without a doubt, week 10-12 of semester 1 have been three of the craziest weeks of my life. I have really underestimated the massive workload for my major subjects. Compared to these, my first year Environments subjects seem like a walk in the park! Anyways, here is a quick summary of what has happened in my uninteresting life the last few weeks, in no particular order:

  • Performing Mozart’s Requiem, as completed by Gordon Kerry, in St. Paul’s Cathedral with MUCS – just awesome! There were some, er, hiccups in the performance but overall it was good. It was even sold out a day or two before the actual  performance. Apparently just the words Mozart and Requiem are a selling point.
  • (Finally) Finishing my architecture design final project – I still cannot understand why architects love big papers. It cost a helluva lot to print full colour A1 sheets! Anyways, there was definitely a wide spectrum of quality in the final submissions, and I’m sad to say mine cannot even be considered as average. Far from it. All I can say is that there is  a vast difference between pages layouted in Photoshop in a 14″ screen and pages printed in a plotter. Note to self: do research printing shops during the holidays to avoid spending $80 (and that’s already the very much discounted rate!) on printing again.
  • Finishing my ‘designing with plants’ site/plant analysis project – I spent so much time on it that I can barely stand, much less walk, think and talk afterwards. After this project, I definitely hate Correa alba, Grevillea bipinnatifida, and the rest of their ilk. And no, they are not spells from Harry Potter.
  • Getting somewhere with my Action Learning Group’s (ALG) project for SALP – We will be tackling the issue of mental health awareness in university. There are already many existing services on mental health – they just need to be promoted. That’s where my group comes in. Apparently, there is a new mental health strategy just released recently by the university, so my ALG could not have had a more appropriate time to do this sort of project.
  • Finishing my 2000 word essay for an Architecture history subject – I used to like, nay, love Egyptology. However, after spending days on end researching and writing about how the religious and cultural traditions of Ancient Egypt have been translated in the architectural treatment of pyramids, I am not so sure anymore. I reckon I have had enough of Pharaohs, pyramids, Osiris and Isis, etc. Well… temporarily anyways. Oh, and I can’t help wondering why I struggle to come up with even 1000 words now when before I was so good at essay writing. If I’m this bad now with essays, I don’t really want to find out how much I suck at calculus now.
  • Having my first ever German debate – Surprisingly, I did well. But of course, tutors are quite lenient this semester as many of us have been studying German for just 3 semesters. Next time, I will definitely make it a point to know my arguments by heart and to get into the whole role-playing (I was supposed to be playing the part of an extremist feminist and honestly, I didn’t really play that role well… to say the least). Oh well. Or as Germans would say, na ja.
  • Procrastinating during exam revision – I should really wrap up this post NOW.
