Julia Hurst

Introducing Dr Julia Hurst, Lecturer in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander History

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Julia Hurst as Lecturer in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander History. Dr Hurst’s appointment will open up new opportunities for our students to take subjects in Indigenous history. To welcome Dr Hurst and to introduce her research to the School community, we invited Dr Henry Reese to record an interview for the School’s podcast. The resulting conversation ranges across the connections between storytelling, history, and performance; the ethics of creating history; and how and where historians can find inspiration and sustenance in their work. Dr Hurst discusses her important work on the history of place, oral history, and the Treaty process; and her future plans for developing the teaching of Indigenous history at Melbourne.

This podcast was produced by the School of Historical and Philosophical Studies at the University of Melbourne. We acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the lands on which our University operates – lands of the Kulin peoples, which includes the Wurundjeri, Boonwurrung, Wathaurong, Dja Dja Wurrung and Taungurung peoples, as well as the Yorta Yorta nation. We pay our respects to their Elders, past and present and emerging, and acknowledge that sovereignty to these lands was never ceded.

In Semester Two 2020, Julia Hurst is teaching into Controversies in Australian History (HIST30064) and Making History (HIST30060). In 2021, she will be teaching a new subject, Introduction to Indigenous History, as well as Global Histories of Indigenous Activism.
