Uni downloads quota
Here’s a quick post for download addicts: an undergrad is only allowed 50MB of downloaded data on-campus per week (whenever you’re prompted for a username and password, your download is being counted). I just found out this week. If your usage exceeds the limit, you won’t be able to browse external sites for that week. Keep this in mind. Avoid videos, graphics-rich contents if possible, unless you don’t need the Internet on-campus.
I believe there was some workaround where in some libraries if you use a wireless laptop you don’t need to log in. XD That’s useful. Also, if you’re a union member, use the SCC on the fourth floor of Union House – no point if you’re not, because you’ll have to pay, but if you’re a union member then you have free access to those machines with unlimited access. (Adult materials notwithstanding.)
I always found that quota weird. Some weeks I’d barely touched it and it wouldn’t let me do anything. Others I downloaded 250MB files, (Pure Pwnage), and still could use it no worries. The computers at Medley Hall were always weird, but we definitely used the same quota as you would anywhere else at the university, since we entered the same password and they explicitly told us that was what we would be using.
I do admit that detail is quite tucked away and isn’t easy to find at all. Hmm, I wonder how long I could play WoW over the network?
Hmm well I don’t have much to say except that I have yet to run into my limit. I’ve been able to get into everything I need though I don’t play WoW 😛
I guess it’s ok because it’s 50mb that gets reset every week not like college where we only get 1gb a semester. So if you go over that in one month, that’s it for the semester (unless you choose to pay per extra mb). On my laptop at college I’ve turned off the “automatically load images option”. There are two guys at college who have gone out and bought their own internet plan. I was almost going to do the same but I’ve figured I’ll just wait and see how much I actually use this first semester. I guess as long as you don’t download movies and songs, it should be fine.
Q: That’s interesting about not having to log in on a wireless laptop round campus….might have to try that some day
